They may spin your head a little or make you roll your eyes, tech geek or dilettante, you need to get chummy with these terms, concepts, the and ideas; why? the times which we live demand it!

These are days when the amount of knowledge at our disposal may seem overwhelming, however, it is ill-advisable to bury your head in the sand, you could get left behind and guess what, you will still have to catch up.

You might set an order of preference or even declutter but here are a few of some futuristic technological terms you may or may not have heard of that you need to know:

1. FUTURE OF WORK

This phrase captures the transformation the work sphere is gradually undergoing because of technological advancements and what the future holds for workers and all people. It simply is the evolution or transformation of work. It comes with a lot of questions and it is the biggest futuristic topic yet.

2. FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

4IR

4IR, as it is popularly referred to is different from previous industrial revolutions. It is characterized by a range of new technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Robotics, Virtual Reality (VR), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) that combine the physical, digital and biological worlds; to change the way we live and work. Those who have gained the most from it have been consumers able to afford and access the digital world.

3. STRATEGIC FORESIGHT

Strategic Foresight

This is also known as Futures Studies or the study of the Future. Strategic Foresight is an organizational, social, and personal practice that allows us to create functional and operational views of alternative futures and possibilities. Through this process, we are better prepared for potential threats and are able to capitalize on hidden opportunities. 

4. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Artificial Intelligence

AI is an area of computer science that emphasizes the creation of intelligent machines that work and react like humans. It is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems.  for example, learning, planning, speech recognition, problem-solving, etc.

5. DATA SCIENCE

Data Science

In simple words, Data Science is the study of Data. Data science is the study of where information comes from, what it represents and how it can be turned into a valuable resource in the creation of business and IT strategies. Data scientists turn raw data into valuable business insights for organizations incorporating techniques like Machine Learning, Cluster Analysis, Data Mining, and Visualization; of course with Mathematics and Statistics.

6. BIG DATA

Big Data is a lot of Data! It is a term used to describe a collection of data that is huge in size and yet growing exponentially with time. In short such data is so large and complex that none of the traditional data management tools are able to store it or process it efficiently. – Guru99 An example of Big Data in use is Facebook. Statistics show that  500+terabytes  of new data gets ingested into the databases of Facebook, every day.
